You may also choose what period of their life you'd like to explore. They could be an open book with their entire past open to exploration...or they could have a veiled past riddled with unanswered questions.
The narrative may span across their entire growth or a very specific, life-changing time in recent memory. It could highlight the moment they lost a loved one or discovered a hidden power within themselves.
I would also be more than happy to write about their lifestyles, hobbies, quirks and flaws if it serves to breathe more life into your character.
